The Church of Scientology—A Church without A Doctrine?

(July 27, 2008) After exerting enormous legal effort in courts around the world in an attempt to protect its copyrighted material and to firmly establish exclusive intellectual property rights to its doctrine, it may turn out that the Church of Scientology’s claims to any such rights are false and that it is guilty of the very crime of copyright infringement that it has accused anyone else who has ever dared to show its name or anything related to the organization in print.

Due to L. Ron Hubbard’s penchant for plagiarism, the C of S is ripe for numerous copyright infringement actions to be brought against it as well as a qui tam action for defrauding the U.S. government as well as the governments of numerous other countries.

If one does a search of the internet for “Fourth Way Enneagram”—looks a lot like “engram,” doesn’t it?—one discovers that many if not all of the principles that the Scientology religion are founded on, and that the C of S claims exclusive intellectual property rights to, actually first appeared in a book entitled In Search of the Miraculous by P.D. Ouspensky, which was first published in 1947—3 years before L. Ron Hubbard wrote Dianetics.

Ouspensky claimed that the enneagram was part of the teachings originally presented by G.I. Gurdjieff in Russia during the First World War. Gurdjieff is quoted by Ouspensky as claiming that this form of enneagram was an ancient secret and was now being partly revealed for the first time. In his early lectures G.I. Gurdjieff described his approach to self-development as a “Fourth Way.” In contrast to the three eastern teachings that emphasize the development of the body, mind, or the emotions separately, Gurdjieff's exercises worked on all three at the same time to promote comprehensive and balanced inner development. Ouspensky documented Gurdjieff as saying that "two or three thousand years ago there were yet other ways which no longer exist and the ways now in existence were not so divided, they stood much closer to one another. The fourth way differs from the old and the new ways by the fact that it is never a permanent way. It has no definite forms and there are no institutions connected with it.

In the book, In Search of the Miraculous, it was noted that Gurdjieff taught that once the initial school with the real teacher is finished, all the other schools which try to continue the work presented by the initial school are no longer real…they are fake.

Gurdjieff indicated that there are fake schools where the teacher either:

May be genuinely mistaken and think that he knows something, when in reality he knows nothing.
May believe another man, who in his turn may be mistaken.
May deceive consciously.

Ouspensky quotes Gurdjieff saying that these teachers lead nowhere, except making the students believe that they are going somewhere. He also added that "It is impossible to recognize a wrong way without knowing the right way. This means that it is no use troubling oneself how to recognize a wrong way. One must think of how to find the right way." Gurdjieff also noted that there are groups of people who believe they follow his knowledge, but they focus only on one or a few aspects of his teachings, and thus obtain negative or wrong results.

Coincidence? I think not!

ACTION REQUESTED Petitioner Jerry Staton respectfully requests the Commissioner of Food and Drugs to issue a public health warning to alert the public to the mental health hazard posed by engaging in the practices of scientology and to order those individuals and organizations that promote the practice of scientology to cease the unqualified administration and interpretation of I.Q. and Personality tests.The following statement… “Warning: Scientology techniques have been found in some cases to worsen and/or prolong the mental troubles of the mentally ill and may produce in persons with no history of mental illness disturbances and anxieties which may precipitate mental trouble.” …should be visible in some way or form wherever Scientology is being advertised or promoted and also wherever Scientology services are provided. STATEMENT OF GROUNDS IQ and personality tests figure prominently in scientology, and are often used to deceive a person as to his state of mental health and to create a feeling of inadequacy and anxiety. The evidence shows that these initial tests are deliberately used to make the individual uncertain and anxious and predispose him to undertake scientology processing or study on the promise that scientology techniques can improve some undesirable trait supposed to have been revealed. These tests are conducted by inexperienced persons, who neither understand what they are doing nor appreciate the significance of the results which they obtain. “[In order to get a person to undergo Scientology processing] you talk to him about the things that are quite ruining his life…quote, unquote. You basically make the person feel really, really bad about the condition they’re in…and take their problems, and you magnify them. You look at how that’s going to affect them in the future. You get the person into a state where they feel that their future is really nothing unless they do something, and then you tell them that the only thing that they can do is Scientology.” - Andrea Catt—former Scientologist Financier, “A Friend of Mankind,” Purinton Pictures, 2006. My friend, Michael Lewitz, was visibly upset after being administered a “free” scientology personality test. I did not know that it was associated with scientology because he spoke in vague terms, saying that he had taken the test at work and referred to the scientologist who interpreted his results just as a “counselor.” In spite of routinely successfully negotiating million dollar contracts as a procurement manager with Wells Fargo Bank, his personality test revealed that “he does not work well with others” and that “he has issues with those in authority,” and the “counselor” told him that he should kill himself because “its people like him who are out there spreading disease.” Telling people to kill themselves is standard in these “counseling” sessions. It is very likely that a percentage of those people—upon being told to kill themselves—actually do kill themselves, but the connection to scientology is not apparent. This is highly irresponsible and is contrary to the benevolent picture that Scientology attempts to paint of the organization for the casual observer. The organization’s practices are contrary to every single recommendation made by President Bush’s New Freedom Commission on Mental Health as well as the Surgeon General’s 1999 Nationwide Call for Suicide Prevention and just ordinary common sense. Unbeknownst to this “counselor,” my friend had a childhood etiology for borderline personality disorder, and had actually experienced two prior episodes of dysphoria after having felt threatened and ashamed, respectively—not that the counselor would have recognized it as anything significant, nor would the counselor have even begun to pick up on my friend’s confusion about his sexuality or his highly pronounced identity disturbance. On August 30th, 2003, my friend, Michael Lewitz, 44, “ran” from Phoenix, AZ. to Reynolds, IN. where he then attempted suicide in an effort to escape his “unbearable emotional pain” during an episode of dysphoria that had been precipitated by his being subjected to the Scientology practice of “auditing” and a Scientology detoxification procedure known as the “Purification rundown.” According to The Anderson Report, the findings and conclusions of the official inquiry into the Church of Scientology conducted for the State of Victoria, Australia in 1965 (see below), “It is not to be doubted that scientology techniques worsen and prolong the mental troubles of the mentally ill and that they produce in even a normal person disturbances and anxieties which may precipitate mental trouble.” As a concerned friend I was told that I had no legal standing to petition a court to order Michael to undergo a mental evaluation, so I tried to stay in touch with him and to let him know that I was still his friend and to just generally be a positive influence. During telephone conversations that I had with Michael before all communication with him was shut off, he indicated that the amount of sleep that he gets has been abridged to sometimes as little as 3 hours per night by activity and the administration of cocaine, and that he has no privacy because his housemate and practicing Scientologist, Donald C. Lay, Jr., Ph.D., routinely searches through his personal belongings and intercepts his mail. Abridgement of privacy and contact/communication with former friends/family are methods utilized in a program of coercive persuasion. Exposure to a program of coercive persuasion greatly alters one’s self-concept, perception of reality, and social relationships, and creates the psychological forces necessary for undue influence to be exerted over one’s independent decision-making ability. In June of 2005, believing that Michael Lewitz and I were friends and having no reason to believe that I would not be welcomed, I took the opportunity that a business trip afforded me to visit him in Reynolds, IN. Michael initially acted as if he was glad to see me, but then suddenly his eyes turned completely black (Note: A strong emotional stimulus (e.g., an unexpected pistol firing) will cause the pupils to dilate. The dilation will persist even if a bright light is presented to the eye, indicating that the emotional response can override the usual pupillary constriction to intense light stimuli. Animal studies have shown that pupillary dilation occurs with stimulation of the hypothalamus, thalamus, and reticular formation. These are brain areas that have been implicated in emotional behavior and behavioral arousal) and he began screaming "get off my land...get off my land." That was the only thing that he said to me as he physically attacked me and assaulted me with a hunting rifle. As Michael continued to pace and mutter to himself, I told his housemate, Dr. Lay, that Michael's behavior was not normal and asked that he get Michael professional help, to which he responded, "just go away." Shortly thereafter, I received a telephone call from his housemate, Donald C. Lay, Jr., Ph.D., during which he stated that the conversation was being recorded. He then went on to say that he routinely intercepts the mail everyday in order to filter out all of the mail addressed to Michael. To illustrate his point, I received a package of 23 unopened letters that I had mailed to Michael between August 2003 and September 2005 with a letter from Dr. Lay, the wording of which clearly indicates that he obstructs Michael’s correspondence of his own volition with no regard as to whether Michael either knows or approves of his doing so. I reported this violation of U.S.C. 18 § 1702, Obstruction of Correspondence to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and received a letter in response that had changed my complaint to one involving U.S.C. 18 § 1708, Mail Theft/Tampering and referenced letters addressed to me instead of to Michael Lewitz. I wrote a letter to inform the Inspector of the mistake that had been made, but I received no response. Senator McCain’s office made an inquiry on my behalf, and I received a letter from the Inspector in Charge of the Inspection Service’s Detroit office, Gregory Campbell, in which he stated that a person removing mail from an authorized depository for mail matter with the intent of blocking the correspondence of another constitutes a “civil, non-mail property dispute that the Inspection Service will not become involved in.” I have reached the conclusion that in order for Inspector Campbell to have misinterpreted U.S.C. 18 § 1702, Obstruction of Correspondence to the degree that he did, he would either have to be a complete idiot or he did so intentionally. Needless to say, no investigation was conducted. No attempt was made to secure the recording of the telephone conversation nor was any interest shown in the unopened letters addressed to Michael that Donald had returned to me. I had personally witnessed Michael exhibit every single manifestation of borderline behavior. Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is classified as a serious mental illness, and it can be easily deduced how much more damaged someone with BPD can become by exposure to cult indoctrination by a group with a predisposition towards that sort of thinking disability. I consulted with three (3) mental healthcare professionals (Dr. Gary Lovejoy, Ph.D.; Elyce M. Benham, MS, NCC, CCFC, and LPC; and Dr. Dina Bachelor Evan) to get their opinions on the behaviors of Michael Lewitz that I was witnessing in order to confirm my suspicion of borderline personality disorder (BPD). The behaviors that I described were attributed to a hypothetical case and Michael was never personally identified during any of these consultations. Elyce M. Benham, MS, NCC, CCFC, and LPC stated: “I’m seeing some descriptions of symptoms that would be consistent with BPD. I’m also seeing some very disturbing things (i.e. the possible fugue states). He appears to have a very high degree of ‘pathology,’ and his identity disturbance per your description is quite pronounced. His compartmentalizing, as you noted, is probably one of the only coping mechanisms that he has to deal with the hideous abuse and neglect he suffered throughout his childhood and adolescence. I believe that you are sincerely trying to get help for your friend, and that’s not an easy thing to do for someone with BPD.” The fact that Michael’s psychological vulnerability due to a serious mental illness is being taken advantage of, the fact that he is being denied proper mental health care, and the fact that exposure to an ongoing program of coercive persuasion without his knowledge or consent places him at great risk of sustaining additional psychological injury qualifies him as an endangered adult under Indiana Code § 12-10-3-2. In October 2005, having reason to believe, as defined by Indiana Code § 12-10-3-6, that he is an endangered adult; I filed a report of adult endangerment as is required of anyone having reason to believe that a person is an endangered adult by Indiana Code § 12-10-3-9. In a bizarre turn of events, APS case manager Angela Shay determined that my report was unwarranted based on her own prejudicial opinion without conducting an investigation as is required by Indiana Code § 12-10-3-6. APS and Angela Shay, Dawn Gross (Angela’s supervisor), and County Prosecutor Jerry Bean as officials thereof then responded to my attempts to appeal APS’ decision by conspiring to deny me the right to immunity under Indiana Code § 12-10-3-11 in violation of U.S.C. 18 § 241 (they met with Michael for the very first time 6 months after I had filed my report—not to investigate my report, but to influence him to file a petition for an order of protection against me by making him believe that my attempt to help him was “stalking” as a subterfuge to hide their dereliction of duty and to make me just go away). They also used their positions as well as the office of county prosecutor in an attempt to get me fired from my job in violation of U.S.C. 18 § 242 and 245. I reported this to the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division Criminal Section and the U.S. District Attorney for the northern Indiana district and have been completely ignored. An ex parte protection order was issued on May 3rd, 2006. At the initial Order of Protection Hearing, Michael testified that he had only discovered that I work for an airline after he had moved to Indiana when, during the little over 2 years that he knew me in AZ, I had given him 2 employee passes for travel, he had called my office and I had answered with a greeting that included the name of the airline, and he had sent email to me using my company email address which also includes the name of the airline. This lends further evidence that Michael Lewitz has borderline personality disorder and is being abused and exploited by Donald C. Lay, Jr., Ph.D. A person with BPD is unreasonable in refusing to break free of their delusion which they have come to accept as their new reality. In order for their present circumstance to make sense, they often must dissociate from their past and recapitulate a new personal history that is more in line with their deluded present. I requested and was granted a hearing that was held on July 17th, 2006, during which I argued that the trial court’s order was void because it denied me immunity from all civil and criminal liability arising from my having made a report of adult endangerment in good faith per I.C. § 12-10-3-11, that it denied me equal protection under that law per the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, that the matter had arisen from the misconduct of APS officials Angela Shay, Dawn Gross, and Jerry Bean who had influenced Michael—who is not a reasonable person due to the presence and influence of BPD as well as his being subjected to an ongoing program of coercive persuasion—to file the petition as a subterfuge to hide their dereliction of duty, and filed motions to quash the order and to order an independent mental examination of Michael Lewitz. The presiding judge, Judge Thacker, stated on record that he’s a Scientologist, denied my motions—thereby denying my right under the 6th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution to present relative and exculpatory evidence in support of my defense—and ordered that the protective order would remain in full force and effect for 2 years. I filed an appeal with the Indiana State Court of Appeals on the grounds that the trial court had committed prejudicial error by denying my motion to order an IME of Michael Lewitz and thereby denying my right to present relative and exculpatory evidence under the 6th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and by denying me equal protection under Indiana Code under the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The appellate court affirmed the trial court’s order stating in its decision that pro se litigants are held to the same standard as licensed lawyers and I had omitted a “statement of case” and a “summary of argument” from my brief. I have attention deficit disorder, a disability protected by the Americans with Disabilities Act and a fact that I had made the court aware of and which had been testified to by Michael during the ex parte hearing for the order of protection. The appellate court committed a Title II violation of the ADA by holding me to the same standard as a licensed lawyer instead of making reasonable accommodation for my disability, a precedent that should be re-evaluated in light of Turgeon v. Brock, Civ. No. 94269-SD, 1994 WL 529919 (D.N.H. September 29, 1994), which determined that State courts are not immune from compliance with the ADA—they must accommodate the disabilities of litigants. I reported this to the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division Disabilities Section which informed me that it could not offer me legal or financial assistance. I did not request legal or financial assistance! What I expected was an investigation of my complaint! I have been unable to find an attorney to take my case—Pre-paid Legal, of which I am a member, advised me that no private attorney will touch it because they don’t stand to make any money off of it. The ACLU has refused my case stating that it only accepts cases in which an individuals constitutional rights have been violated, that don't involve complex factual issues, and that affect a great number of people (which ironically describes my case exactly) as has Trial Lawyers for Public Justice, Lambda Legal, the Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law, and Mind Freedom. I have been denied every legal right that I am entitled to as a U.S. citizen. I have had violations of Federal law perpetrated against me and have been denied the right as a victim to the enforcement of these laws. A sitting judge has ruled based on Scientology doctrine that eschews psychiatry and psychiatrists and, by denying me my rights as a U.S. citizen under the U.S. Constitution, has broken his oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States of America (which is considered a crime of high treason in many states), which is facilitating the continued abuse and exploitation of a mentally ill friend, and this doesn’t elicit so much as a yawn from anyone. The United States Supreme Court have interpreted the federal crime of kidnapping to include the imposition of “an unlawful physical or mental restraint" to confine the victim against his will. Before all communication with Michael was shut off he told me that he had thought of leaving Reynolds, IN. numerous times but felt that he couldn’t. Exposure to a program of coercive persuasion without the victim’s knowledge or consent puts them at great risk of developing irreparable physical and psychiatric disorders up to and including schizophrenia, self mutilation, and suicide. It can be easily deduced how much more damaged someone with BPD can become by exposure to cult indoctrination by a group with a predisposition towards that sort of thinking disability. The Surgeon General’s Call for Suicide Prevention 1999 identifies specific risk factors for suicide and calls for an awareness of those risk factors and intervention before a crisis stage is reached: “While there is no one cause of suicide, researchers tell us that suicidal behavior is associated with a number of risk factors that frequently occur in combination. These include: § Clinical depression and other mental illnesses. More than 60 percent of all people who complete suicide suffer from major depression. Almost all people who take their own life have a diagnosable mental or substance abuse disorder or both. § Adverse life events. Such events may be confusion about one's personal identity; a family crisis like death and divorce. § Familial factors, such as a family history of suicide, of mental illness and substance abuse, of violence and sexual abuse. § Prior suicide attempt, firearm in the home, or impulsive or aggressive tendencies… …all of which apply to Michael Lewitz. Michael’s mental condition has deteriorated from “I hope to visit you soon...you are the best person I have ever met” to “I am in fear of my life and suspect that Jerry may attempt to harm me.” Those with personality disorders are three (3) times more likely to commit suicide than those without, and 90% of completed suicides are those with untreated, under-treated, or undiagnosed mental illness. 10 to 12% of untreated cases of BPD end in suicide and Michael Lewitz has already attempted once since “running” to Indiana in an attempt to escape his “unbearable emotional pain:”

“Myth: A person who has made a serious suicide attempt is unlikely to make another.
The truth is that persons who have made prior attempts are often at greater risk of completing suicide. A suicide attempt is a cry for help and a warning that something is terribly wrong and should be taken with utmost seriousness.”

Michael Lewitz will most likely kill himself before this matter is taken seriously and that is unacceptable because it can be prevented. I have been attempting to get help now for 3 years! A court ordered independent mental evaluation of Michael Lewitz to detect the presence and influence of borderline personality is my Constitutional right to present exculpatory evidence under the 6th Amendment. I have been denied immunity under Indiana Code and equal protection under the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution because the judge is a scientologist and is ruling based on Scientology doctrine that eschews psychiatry and psychiatrists and teaches that those who are suppressive toward Scientology have no rights instead of accepted law and practice and everyone seems to think that this is acceptable! Since it is impossible to get any of the government or non-profit agencies that claim to work toward the prevention of mental illness and suicide to intervene so that Michael Lewitz can be spared further abuse, exploitation, and psychological injury, as well as to prevent his possible suicide a public health warning issued by the F.D.A. via the major news media quite possibly could have prevented him from falling victim to what has transpired. It is not to be doubted that the public needs to be warned of this danger to their mental health so that it can be avoided. The Anderson Report ,The Official Inquiry into the Church of Scientology Commissioned by the State of Victoria, Australia and Published in 1965, offers still more grounds for granting this petition: Chapter 23
Dangers To Mental Health Although there are several features of scientology which are to be condemned, its threat to health - particularly mental health - ranks paramount. The HASI's boast is that it is the world's largest mental health organization, an astonishing claim, the more so because it has flourished for some years in open competition with orthodox medicine and psychology. Thinly disguised as something of quality and value, scientology has insidiously infiltrated the community. The Board heard expert medical evidence to the effect that there are numerous conditions, physical as well as mental, where skill and experience are required to detect them in their incipient stages when prompt treatment is tremendously important. A person exhibiting some degree of lethargy, a feeling of inadequacy, insecurity or anxiety may be suffering from a cerebral tumour, some form of glandular disorder, drug intoxication or some psychiatric condition, the detection of which is often difficult even by skilled practitioners. With many types of psychiatric illness it is important to treat the patient as early as possible and the prospect of ultimate successful treatment could be jeopardized by delays in receiving psychiatric attention. The expert evidence was to the effect that it was difficult to determine whether a person showing signs of depression was suffering from melancholia or from unhappiness or tension. Even the most experienced and skilled psychiatrist is aided by modern laboratory equipment, radiologists and well trained psychologists, and he proceeds with caution; the price of error may be the suicide of the patient, and inadequate medical training may well result in failure to locate, as the cause of the patient's depression, brain tumour, cerebral clot or other medical condition. The more trained and experienced the psychiatrist the greater is his humility in his investigation, and the greater is the contrast between his investigation of the patient's condition and the cavalier way in which the HASI assumes that all conditions are amenable to indiscriminately applied scientology techniques. Scientologists almost invariably apply sledge-hammer methods, hitting savagely wherever they see a head. Such methods are often disastrous. One of the very grave aspects of scientology is that its practitioners almost entirely lack any medical knowledge, and are unable to discern in a preclear symptom which would indicate to a medical practitioner the need for medical attention. Williams and other witnesses asserted that the HASI had a "filter system" wherein "the ill and insane are not encouraged to seek scientology as a cure", and that it was not the policy of the HASI to accept for processing or as a student a person having a history of mental illness or who appeared to have mental illness. The HASI uses printed forms of contract in which preclears and students acknowledge that the HASI is extending no guarantee of cure of any specific ailment the applicant may possess and that the course he is to undergo or treatment he is to receive is not in any way medical or psychiatric treatment but a series of exercises designed to increase ability. The HASI somewhat ingenuously thinks that the terms of these contracts ensure that their processes do not possess the quality of treatment of physical or mental conditions. It was said by the HASI witnesses that as a further safeguard, the applicant was given a "pre-processing security check" with the assistance of the E-meter. Williams said that people who were in fact undergoing psychiatric or other medical care were told that they were unacceptable for processing. The whole routine, including the printed form, is all part of Hubbard's cunning in deluding his victims. In a perverse way it heightens the belief of the applicant that scientology will cure his complaint, for this unctuous negation by scientology of the claim to cure, while at the same time loudly proclaiming in its literature that it positively cures, suggests to the victim that scientology must be the great healer it claims to be because of the apparent modest disclaimer it so disarmingly makes. The plain fact, however, is that the "filter" system does not filter; it was never intended to filter out those in need of psychiatric help or possessing mental troubles, for these are scientology's prime target. It is quite apparent from the evidence the Board heard and the files it examined that a substantial number of people suffering from various mental illnesses and in need of psychiatric care were accepted by the Melbourne HASI and by the Geelong and Hawthorn organizations for processing and training. Some of these persons had had earlier psychiatric treatment, and in many such cases that fact was known to the HASI and the other organizations before they were accepted for processing and training. Other persons who were evidently mentally ill were also accepted, or they developed obvious symptoms of mental troubles during their processing and training. After their sojourn in scientology, a significant number of these required and some received psychiatric treatment in State mental hospitals. How many in fact received psychiatric treatment in hospitals and from private practitioners could not be determined. The Board heard evidence about one person who had been in and out of mental hospitals over a period of several years. He paid a total of £927 to the HASI. He was for a time a member of the HASI staff, at a time when the HASI knew he had been receiving psychiatric treatment. As a staff member he would be handling the affairs of preclears. Another person, after scientology processing, became a voluntary patient in a psychiatric hospital for four months. On his release the HAS[ signed him up for 300 hours. After some scientology processing he had to return to the hospital. In several cases scientology processing reduced the mental health of the persons concerned to a state which required psychiatric treatment. Many who need psychiatric treatment as a result of scientology processing most probably have not had it, because of the fear and hate of the medical profession which Hubbard has inculcated in them. Hubbard has admitted in HCO Pol. Lr. of the 10th October (probably 1960), that one of the consequences of scientology processing can be "nervous breakdown" involving "observation" in an asylum. He even regards the development of the "sad effect" as a good sign in processing. Of the "sad effect", Hubbard writes, "The Sad Effect. We could call this Tearculi Apathia Magnus and everyone would be in great awe of it. But I see no reason to follow the Latinated nonsense of yesterday's failured [sic] sciences. Call it something simple and the auditor will feel he can do something about it and even the preclear will cheer up a bit. So it is 'the Sad Effect'. This is a state of great sadness, apathy, and misery and desire for suicide." It is such cases as this that scientologists enthusiastically process, and such states they are proud to produce. The sequel to one of the demonstration sessions impressed upon the Board in a most dramatic and convincing way the great harm which flows from the ignorance of scientologists who are unaware of and incapable of understanding the dangerous nature of their techniques and the real condition of mental health of those on whom they are practicing. The particular session demonstrated what was called "listen style auditing" (See Chapter 13). It was said that this was one of the simpler processes, quite a low grade process, and was designed to help people talk about their worries and problems and get them "off their chests", on the basis that people found relief when there was someone ready and willing to listen to them. It enabled the person with problems and worries to talk about them and the auditor, on this occasion being very literally one who listened, merely started the preclear talking and then sat silent, providing a receptive ear. The demonstration session was of about thirty minute’s duration. The auditor was Tampion and the preclear was a woman approaching middle age. She appeared to be nervous, excitable and enthusiastic. This woman had initially signed for 50 hours processing in June, 1962, but the director of processing, carrying out "the old routine" as directed by Hubbard, had certified that she required 300 hours before she could obtain a "stable gain", and she had then signed up for 300 hours. By February, 1964, she had had something in excess of 60 hours' auditing and had undergone some training. The session was conducted in a small room with only the auditor and the preclear present; the Board and others viewed proceedings in another room on closed television circuit. An E-meter was used. The session began with the customary strict routine of "start of session", and the auditor then commanded the preclear to "Tell me about the right decisions you have made". The preclear thereupon commenced talking and almost without pause talked for the whole of the session about herself, her daughter, her husband and his woman friend, her neighbors, her work and her employment. It was a somewhat pitiful performance in which the preclear seemed to he talking herself into the belief that all the problems associated with the matters she mentioned were working themselves out and that she was understanding them better. At the end of the session, she said she had made gains. Nine days after the demonstration session this preclear was admitted as a patient to the care of the Mental Health Authority. The Board is appalled at the realization that it witnessed this unfortunate woman being processed into insanity. At that early stage of the Inquiry the Board had not been informed of the potentially dangerous nature of this apparently simple and easy "listen style auditing". Subsequently a psychiatrist witness who read the transcript of this woman's demonstration session gave evidence that her behavior in the session indicated clearly that she was in a state of mania rather than ecstasy which would have been readily apparent to a psychiatrist. Williams, Tampion and Mrs. Tampion were present at this session and the woman was obviously regarded by them as a suitable subject for auditing. Williams is a "Doctor of Scientology", and Tampion, for his services in conducting the demonstration sessions, was subsequently awarded the "degree" of "Doctor of Scientology" by Hubbard. Neither Williams nor Tampion nor Mrs. Tampion had the slightest idea that there was anything mentally wrong with this preclear. Later, Williams unconvincingly sought to explain the need for hospitalization as being the stress of vaguely hinted at family troubles. Williams, when asked did he know what a schizophrenic was, was constrained to answer that he knew only in the broadest terms. Tampion claimed that because of his scientology training his ability to treat people with psychotic and neurotic conditions was superior to the ability of psychiatrists although he did not bother to give the time to treating such people. The kind of treatment given to this unfortunate woman was the very kind which precipitated her breakdown. The Board heard expert psychiatric evidence to the effect that it was one of the well known traps in handling depressives to believe that by encouraging them to talk and "get things off their chests" one was doing some good. In dealing with a person showing signs of depression, psychiatrists have to exercise great care and judgment in determining whether it is advisable to allow the person to talk about himself or not. The traditional concept of a psychiatrist as one who encourages a person to sit down and talk about anything is not correct. In order to determine whether a patient should be allowed to talk about himself, the psychiatrist must be a highly trained physician, with insight of many branches of medicine, as well as of his own specialty, and the listener must be able to observe and appreciate the danger signs. In particular cases, positive harm may be done by encouraging a person in depression to talk about himself for the patient could be developing a pathological sense of guilt. and to allow him to elaborate on his guilt may develop in him such a sense of guilt that he may well attempt suicide. There was further expert psychiatric evidence that such techniques as listen style auditing encourage a trust and dependency by the patient on the auditor. and tend to mobilize guilt and bring up emotions and anxiety in the preclear. Such anxiety tends to provoke more symptoms, more anxiety and perhaps more depression, leading to a worsening of the situation. In any event, being a good listener or interviewer is not sufficient. What is required is an understanding of the complexities which are involved, an understanding impossible of attainment by a person whose only claim is that he is a scientology-trained auditor. The danger to mental health is further emphasized by the peculiar basis of scientology. Its practitioners use techniques based on impossible theories and directed towards the treatment of "conditions" said to be brought about by completely fictitious circumstances. Based on fantasy, scientology has built up a body of "knowledge" which is fanciful and simply not true: thus scientology treats its imaginary "diseases" or conditions with its own fantastic procedures. The alarming feature is that real diseases and conditions do exist and often the fantastic scientology procedures are positively harmful to the real condition. It is like applying an oxy-welding torch to a leaking rubber tube to weld on a patch of rubber over a hole that does not exist, the real trouble being a leaking valve. It is unnecessary to dwell further at any length on the harm which scientology has done and can do to the mental health of the community. It is not to be doubted that scientology techniques worsen and prolong the mental troubles of the mentally ill and that they produce in even a normal person disturbances and anxieties which may precipitate mental trouble. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT The only potential impact that this action would have on the environment would be due to the possible crippling of the Church of Scientology’s effectiveness in recruiting and retaining membership, however, the available capacity of the nations refuse system should comfortably handle any increase in demand posed by the discarding of individuals’ Scientology-related materials.

ECONOMIC IMPACT Due to a decreased membership and subsequent financial standing, properties currently occupied by the Church of Scientology will most likely have to be vacated as the corporation downsizes, and an increased burden on the nation’s mental healthcare system is likely as former Scientologists seek to come to terms with their feelings of anger over having been so deceived, controlled, and manipulated.

When Good Men Do Nothing

So much of the history of the struggle between good and evil can be explained by Edmund Burke's observation. Time and again those who profess to be good seem to clearly outnumber those who are evil, yet those who are evil seem to prevail far too often. Seldom is it the numbers that determine the outcome, but whether those who claim to be good men are willing to stand up and fight for what they know to be right. There are numerous examples of this sad and awful scenario being played out over and over again in the scriptures.

They Get Nothing Good Done

When good men do nothing, they get nothing good done. To be good, one must do good. The Lord commands his people to do good (Luke 6:35; Eph. 2:10). Christ "gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works" (Titus 2:14).

In the parable of the talents, Jesus described a man who did nothing. When he received his Lord's money, he "went and digged in the earth, and hid his Lord's money" (Matt. 25:18). When his Lord returned, he returned to the Lord just what he had been given (Matt. 25:25). Notice, the servant did not do any outright evil, such as stealing the money, but then neither did he do anything good. He did nothing and he got nothing good accomplished. Jesus said he was a "wicked and slothful servant" (Matt. 25:26).

Jesus rebuked the church at Laodicea for doing nothing. "I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked" (Rev. 3:15-17).

Too many Christians and too many churches do nothing. They are standing idly by, they are mere spectators. They sit on the sidelines instead of actively participating and working for the good. If good wins, they join in the celebration though they did nothing to produce the victory. If evil wins, they will complain long and loud though their own apathy helped produce the undesirable result.

When Jesus found a fig tree with "nothing thereon, but leaves only" He cursed the tree and "presently the fig tree withered away" (Matt. 21:19). What will He do with those who claim to be good and yet who do nothing? John the baptist warned, "And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire" (Matt. 3:10; John 15:2).

They Help Evil To Triumph

When good men do nothing, evil triumphs. Evil, sin and sinful men must be opposed. God commands those who are good, not just to avoid evil but actively oppose it.

Christians are to not only to "have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but (also) reprove them" (Eph. 5:11). Those who do nothing about sin and evil, help the sin and evil to prevail. One who is silent when there are those around him in sin becomes a partaker with them (Eph. 5:7).

In the days of Elijah, the silence of many had allowed the evil of Ahab and Jezebel to prevail throughout the land of Israel . "And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? If the Lord be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word" (1 Kings 18:21). The silence of the people spoke volumes of their indecisiveness and inaction. Their failure to stand up, speak up and speak out permitted wicked and evil men to run rampant.

Jesus told of a traveler who was robbed, beaten and left him half dead. The men who did this were wicked and did a very wicked thing. But the Levite and priest allowed this evil to continue unanswered by doing nothing as they each "passed by on the other side" (Luke 10:31-32). Fortunately for the traveler there was one man, a Samaritan, who was willing to stand up for what was right (Luke 10:33-36).

Jesus warned "He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad" (Matt. 12:30). In the fight against evil there is no middle ground, no gray area, no neutrality. Those who are not actively and vigorously fighting against evil are helping evil to triumph.

They Are No Longer Good

When good men do nothing, they are no longer good. Many have the mistaken notion that good is merely the absence of doing that which is wrong. Not so! One is good not merely because he does no evil, but because he is actively working for what is good. "Let him eschew evil, and do good" (1 Pet. 3:11). James explained, "Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin" (James 4:17).

The eldest of Israel , Reuben, knew his brothers' murderous plot against their younger brother Joseph was wrong. He started an attempt to deliver Joseph, but as he hesitated and vacillated, the other brothers sold Joseph into slavery. When Reuben heard what they had done, he realized his failure to act had helped to bring about this evil result.

Instead of correcting his error, Reuben sought to cover his guilt by agreeing with his brothers to lie to their father about Joseph's disappearance (Gen. 37:18-35). Reuben had "good intentions" and he was not even present when Joseph was sold into slavery, but he knew his inaction and absence made him just as guilty as the rest of his wicked brothers. This guilt continued to haunt him through the years (Gen. 42:21-22).

The prophet Obadiah severely condemned the Edomites for doing nothing when evil was befalling their brethren, the Jews. When Jerusalem was invaded by her enemies, the Edomites "stood on the other side" doing nothing but watching the slaughter as spectators. God said by their failure to act and to help their brethren "even thou wast as one of them" (Obad. 11).

Today, there are preachers and Christians who fail and refuse to meet the real foe, refute error and fight the enemy. Instead, they have turned to viciously savaging their own brethren. They are filled with bitterness and hatred and they maliciously attack, slander and misrepresent other Christians and gospel preachers.

Paul warned about such men and behavior among those professing to be Christians, "But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another" (Gal. 5:15). Those who engage in such behavior are spiritual cannibals.

While the conduct of these so-called Christians is shameful, what about those supposedly "good" men who do nothing? Those stand on the other side and do nothing but watch as their brothers are being slandered, slaughtered and devoured, they cease being innocent bystanders and idle spectators. Their failure to act not only allows evil to triumph, but makes them just as guilty as the spiritual cannibals they refuse to reprove and rebuke. In God's words, "even thou wast as one of them" (Obad. 11).

Conclusion

"Be not deceived; God is not mocked; for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap" (Gal. 6:7). Those who fail or refuse to do good in the face of evil are sowing some dangerous seeds. They are doing nothing good as Jesus commanded them to do; they are helping evil to win and have ceased being good and have become partakers of the evil they did nothing to stop.

Do not allow evil to triumph. Do not sit by and do nothing. Stand up and be counted, speak up against evil and speak out against evil men and their sinful deeds.

Scientology is not a religion--it is a secret society with a secret doctrine that eschews psychiatrists and psychiatry, and teaches that those who are suppressive toward scientology have no rights of any kind and actions taken against them are not punishable. BOTH THE GERMAN AND BELGIUM GOVERNMENTS ARE SERIOUSLY CONSIDERING LABELING THE CHURCH OF SCIENTOLOGY A CRIMINAL ORGANIZATION! Before the cries of “religious persecution” replace analytic thought, think about what this means to the U.S., a country in which those who practice scientology hold positions in every conceivable level of government and law enforcement. The issue of whether Scientology is a religion or a cult desperately needs to be clarified. People ignorantly equate tax exempt status with religion, assuming that the IRS is even capable of making that distinction. The U.S. government has no "Department of Religious Designation." The thing that distinguishes a bona fide religion from a secret society is quite obvious, yet it continues to escape many people. A secret society, the goal of which is to make its members into deployable agents willing to fanatically use all of the resources available to them to further the organization, is distinguished by adherence to a secret doctrine that is only revealed to indoctrinated members of the society. A bona fide religion’s doctrine is readily available to everyone whether they are members of that religion or not. Scientology has waged numerous court battles against former members in an attempt to keep their secret doctrine a secret. I do not begrudge any secret society’s right to exist, but if it is going to abuse our 1st Amendment rights and take money out of our pockets by defrauding the IRS, then we have a right to know exactly what its doctrine says. Scientology is a secret society whose members adhere to its secret doctrine and think nothing of using their resources to neutralize its opponents! I am currently experiencing this first hand as a result of my attempt to prevent the further abuse, exploitation, and possible suicide of a mentally ill friend. The judge, who stated on record that he’s a scientologist, has denied repeated motions to order an IME of my friend and has denied me immunity, equal protection, and the right to present exculpatory evidence. Membership in an organization that espouses the denial of civil and constitutional rights to persons who don’t adhere to that group’s doctrine is contrary to Judicial Rules of Conduct, specifically Canon 2(C). I get the distinct impression that everyone thinks that I am just making all of this up! I could not have made this stuff up even if I had tried, and I swear that everything that I have claimed can be easily verified. The spoon-feeding and our willingness to simply swallow anything and everything that's presented to us must stop! We need to engage our critical thinking skills, disengage the autopilot once in awhile, and think and behave like the sentient beings that we are instead of like lemmings rushing en masse into the sea!

Involvement with this organization is probably the closest that one can come to experiencing Hell without dying...where cries for help are ignored...no one cares about your pain or discomfort but you.

Indiana Adult Protective Services determines that a reported case of adult endangerment is unfounded based on prejudicial opinion instead of a reasonable investigation leaving the endangered adult in question to suffer the consequences.

(October 3, 2007) An ongoing legal battle to force Indiana Adult Protective Services (APS) to comply with the law—Indiana Code requires APS to investigate all reports of adult endangerment--has run into a temporary roadblock in the form of the denial of the reporter’s petition to transfer jurisdiction to the Indiana State Supreme Court.

“This is just a minor set back, however. I just have to go back to the trial court—I filed a Motion for Relief from the Court’s Order of May 3rd, 2006 on September 28th on the grounds that it denies me immunity from all civil and criminal liability arising from my having made a report of adult endangerment in good faith and equal protection under the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, and that the court denied me the right to present relevant and exculpatory evidence in support of my defense under the 6th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution by denying my motions to order an independent mental evaluation (IME). Also, I am not precluded from filing as many independent actions as it takes to get this matter noticed.”

“The fact that no private attorney will touch the case because they don’t stand to make any money off of it has actually turned out to be a blessing in disguise. It has saved me a ton of money and I have learned quite a bit about the legal process. I can now write legal briefs with my eyes closed—I seem to have a natural talent for law and friends have told me that I should go to law school.”

In August of 2003, the endangered adult in question, Michael Lewitz, experienced a severe episode of dysphoria marked by a highly pronounced identity disturbance and dissociation and “ran” to Reynolds , IN from Phoenix , AZ where he then attempted suicide in an effort to escape his unbearable emotional pain. This was precipitated by a weekend trip that Michael had gone on with some “friends” during which he participated in the Scientology practice of “auditing” and was put through a “purification rundown”—the Scientology practice of sitting in a sauna for extended periods of time while drinking cooking oil and being administered extremely high doses of B-complex vitamins.

According to statements made by Michael Lewitz during telephone conversations before all communication was shut off, the amount of sleep that he gets has been abridged to sometimes as little as 3 hours per night by activity and the administration of cocaine, and he has no privacy because his “family” routinely searches through his personal belongings and intercepts his mail.

These are all methods utilized in a program of coercive persuasion, and in 1988, Supreme Court Justices Brennan and Marshall described psychological coercion when they explained "as a factual matter" that certain psychological, economic, and social means of coercion can be just as effective as physical or legal means, particularly where the victims are especially vulnerable.” They also wrote that “In other contexts, we have recognized that nonphysical coercion can induce involuntary action. For example, we have interpreted the federal crime of kidnapping to include the imposition of "an unlawful physical or mental restraint" to confine the victim against his will.”

“Strangely enough, APS officials Angela Shay and Dawn Gross along with County Prosecutor Jerry Bean chose to conspire to deny me the right to immunity and to use their positions to attempt to have me terminated from my position as a flight dispatcher with a major U.S. air carrier instead of investigating my report of adult endangerment. This resulted in my being removed from performing safety related duties until an IME cleared me to return to work”

“This has all been reported to the U.S. Department of Justice, the F.B.I., and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. An agent with the Lafayette resident agency of the F.B.I. responded that my claims are 'just my opinion' and that I 'have no beef' (I assume that this means that my claims have no merit, which is his opinion because it would be impossible for him to have made that determination without conducting an investigation, which he did not do). His response is equivalent to him telling me that it's just my opinion if I would have told him that the sun is bright and warm--it makes no sense and resembles the normal scientologist response, 'you believe what you believe,' often used to discount someone else's claims."

There are, broadly speaking, two types of hypnosis: passive hypnosis, and command or authoritative hypnosis. Hypnosis, properly administered by skilled practitioners, has its proper place in psychiatric practice, and, in suitable cases, produces beneficial results. In the practice of medicine the type of hypnosis generally used is passive; the patient is allowed to, and helped to, go into hypnosis entirely voluntarily, and the hypnotist plays a completely passive role. This technique is quite the reverse of authoritative or command hypnosis, where the hypnotist assumes positive authoritative control over the patient who, though he may or may not be aware of what techniques the practitioner is practising on him, is nevertheless under the domination of the hypnotist pursuant to positive commands.

The Anderson Report firmly concluded that most scientology and dianetic techniques are those of authoritative hypnosis and as such are dangerous.

According to Josie Hadley and Carol Staudacher, co-authors of Hypnosis for Change, Third Edition, there are specific problem areas for which hypnosis is not well suited...the person who has unrealistic expectations, the borderline personality, and the psychotic.

The person who has unrealistic expectations:

This is a person who believes that hypnosis/scientology is a magic cure-all. Most, if not all, scientologists seem to fall within this category.

The borderline personality:

Manifestations of Borderline Behavior

Idealizes and quickly attaches to other individuals
Quickly and inexplicably transfers loyalties from one person to another without justification
Mirrors behaviors deemed acceptable by the object of idealization
Withdraws feelings of love and affection from significant other when having to deal with a family crisis
Has experienced repeated episodes of dysphoria, each precipitated by a perceived threat, shame, or embarrassment
Projects blame onto others instead of accepting responsibility for his behavior
Doesn’t have a clearly defined sense of self or a clearly defined set of beliefs
Needs to be in a relationship in order to have the sense of focus that comes from the false sense of self acquired from the other person.
Dissociates from his past
Uses work and lists as methods to avoid having to deal with painful feelings and emotions.
Thoughts and perceptions are severely cognitively distorted and he feels that anyone who doesn’t think as he does is simply out to deceive him.
He’s totally irrational and unreasonable refusing to break out of his delusion, which has now become his reality.

Borderlines may need to feel in control of other people because they feel so out of control with themselves. In addition, they may be trying to make their own world more predictable and manageable. People with BPD may unconsciously try to control others by putting them in no-win situations, creating chaos that no one else can figure out, or accusing others of trying to control them. Conversely, some people with BPD may cope with feeling out of control by giving up their own power; for example, they may choose a lifestyle where all choices are made for them, such as the military or a cult, or they may align themselves with abusive people who try to control them through fear.

The Psychotic:

This is a person suffering from severe thought or mood disorders. It is imperative that the hypnotherapist be a skilled professional with a wealth of experience. Scientology auditors and field ministers aren't even aware that what they are doing is hypnosis and therefore are not trained to properly deal with problems that may arise.

Hypnosis used as the sole treatment of serious disorders may either intensify the existing condition, or have no effect at all.

One can easily deduce that someone with a pre-existing serious mental disorder is very much at risk under the influence of cult indoctrination and practices, and it has been shown how very much more damaged they may become by being given a thought disorder by a group that conforms to a prior tendency to this sort of thinking disability.
