The Purification Rundown

The Purification Rundown, known as "The Purif" within Scientology, is a program used by the Church of Scientology which, according to the church, results in detoxification, and was developed by Scientology's founder L. Ron Hubbard. According to the Church's website, the program is a "combination of exercise, vitamins, nutrition and sauna use," which purportedly "dislodges drug residues and other toxins from the fatty tissues so that these substances can then be eliminated from the body." While it is heavily promoted as a health regimen within Scientology, and in Scientology's rehabilitation program Narconon, the procedure is viewed as dangerous by most medical professionals, as it calls for saunas and vitamins far in excess of what medical professionals considers safe levels.

Auditing

Auditing is Scientology's main practice, and is nothing more than authoritarian hypnosis with biofeedback provided by a skin galvanometer. It constitutes a form of coercive persuasion within the context of Scientology. Persons subjected to coercive persuasion without their knowledge or consent can develope irreparable physical and psychiatric disorders up to and including schizophrenia, self-mutilation, and suicide. Also, Scientology does not take into consideration that not all mental conditions respond to hypnosis and with some psychological disorders, such as borderline personality disorder (BPD); the use of hypnosis is contraindicated and can actually intensify its symptoms.

Human rights abuses

Programs of coercive persuasion rob their victims of their free will and autonomy--the most basic Constitutional freedoms--in addition to creating the necessary psychological forces necessary for their independent decision-making ability to be unduly influenced. Click here for a point by point comparison of Scientology doctrine versus the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Intentional Tort

The Church of Scientology’s practice of “disconnection” encourages the practitioners of Scientology to disconnect or shun all contact with former friends and family members who don’t subscribe to Scientology’s methods and could possibly talk them out of their decision to participate in this cult group. Little known, unknown (or just simply unacknowledged) is the fact that this practice violates Intentional Tort, which prohibits the intentional infliction of emotional distress. Scientology’s practice of disconnection destroys marriages, partnerships, and friendships, causing untold emotional pain and suffering to all involved. Everyone has the right to choose with whom they will or will not associate with. “Disconnection,” however, is not a choice. Practicing Scientologists are told who they must “disconnect” from and are denied services until they comply.

Debt Servitude/Peonage

The reality for many Scientologists is a life spent as an overworked and underpaid Church staff member in order to pay for their debt owed to the Church for the endless courses and auditing sessions that it requires. This is known as “peonage,” and Section 1581 of Title 18 U.S.C. makes it unlawful to hold a person in "debt servitude," or peonage.

Some may argue (some already have argued) that forcing the Church of Scientology to disclose the possible harmful affects of "auditing" will somehow restrict one's freedom of religious choice. That argument is absolute nonsense. Labeling simply provides information. By not disclosing the possible negative effects that can stem from a decision to practice Scientiology, the Church of Scientology is actually restricting the freedom of religious choice. An actual, bona fide "choice" to practice Scientology can not be made unless a person has all of the information regarding the practice of Scientology available to them. The deception practiced by the Church of Scientology, in effect, robs that person of their freedom of religious choice, which I would think could be considered a violation of TITLE 18, U.S.C., SECTION 241, "CONSPIRACY AGAINST RIGHTS."
